We all know Einstein was an inventive guy. But did you know he also had a reputation (among other things) for being a joker? According to Einstein “any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves”. He also gave us this lesser known formula: “If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z, X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut”. Why is this important? Well, research out of Israel has shown that humour is great way of increasing our creativity.
The researchers had two groups of people complete an idea generation task. The first group listened to a recording of a popular Israeli comedian before completing the test, while the second group completed the test without any pre-test comedy. Funnily enough, the group who listened to comedy performed much better than the second group on the idea generation task. As humour involves novelty and absurdity it seems humour frees our brains from conventional thought which allows us to form more creative ideas.
So next time you’re in a creative pickle, put your pen down, get on YouTube and watch one of your favourite comedians, then get back to work and reap the rewards.
